Pattinson has announced his retirement from international cricket, aged just 31. With the Ashes at home under two months away from commencing, it comes as a surprise that Pattinson has decided to hang up his boots, but he said he is happy with the decision he made.

Pattinson revealed that he was keen on pushing for a spot in the Ashes squad, but with COVID-19 halting the Australian domestic season, he was unable to get a lot of game time. Subsequently, he felt that he did not have enough time to make a push, or even if he found a place by chance, he would not be ready for it.

Hence, he decided to focus more on the domestic circuit, helping the next generation talents to grow. He will not be playing for Victoria for a few more years before calling it quits entirely, as he intends to spend some time with his family.

“Now I have made the decision I am hoping to really enjoy the last three or four years of cricket. I have had a great time over the years and thank Cricket Australia for the opportunities, the faith they have put in me, and of course all of my team-mates through the journey.

They have instilled a lot of trust in me especially at times when I have been injured and helped me through those times. For that, I am very grateful,”

The news came out of the blue for a lot of cricket fans, who haven’t seen Pattinson play a Test since January 2020. He appeared for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League last season and was an impressive addition next to Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, where he picked up 11 wickets in 10 games.

Pattinson played 21 Tests for Australia, and picked up 81 wickets at an average of 26.33. He also represented the national side in 15 ODIs and four T20Is, and struggled to recapture his place after injuries kept him away for long durations.

George Bailey – his former captain and Australia’s chairman of selectors – applauded the fast bowler for his work ethic and commitment. According to ESPNcricinfo, he stated that Pattinson represents what it means to play for the national side, and his hard work and sacrifice will inspire plenty.
