As the world took note and nodded in approval of Scotland’s newly-designed jersey for the T20 World Cup 2021 in Oman and the UAE, they were all in for a massive shock when it emerged that the person behind the popular gear is a schoolgirl.

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer and his men are battling it out against the best teams of the world while wearing a design created by a teen named Rebecca Downie. She was is the one who created the new design of the shirts worn by the Scots for their country’s fourth T20 World Cup appearance.

Rebecca earned the right to decide the jersey that the national team cricketers will be wearing for the T20 World Cup after winning a competition that Cricket Scotland had launched to try and create interest amongst the wider public.

The design was selected “unanimously” by the team from designs sent by over 200 school children across the country. What impressed players and the Scottish board the most about Rebecca’s design is the presence of the colours of “thistle”, which is Scotland’s national emblem.

After selecting her design, the board invited Rebecca and her family as ‘special guests’ for recent home T20I games against Zimbabwe in Edinburgh, where she was presented the first jersey out of the production line.

“I was so excited when I heard I had won the competition, I couldn’t believe it. I was so happy to see the shirt in real life, it looks brilliant!

It was amazing to meet the team and watch them play against Zimbabwe. I will be wearing my shirt and cheering them on in every game in the World Cup,”

Rebecca was quoted as saying by Cricket Scotland.

Speaking on behalf of his team, Coetzer highlighted that he felt “great” to be meeting a fan like Rebecca, whose passion for the game comes across so beautifully through the jersey that she has designed. He added that his team is “really proud” to be wearing the new jersey.

In their very first game with the new design, Scotland clinched a major full-member scalp, defeating Bangladesh in a close Group B encounter at Muscat in Oman.
