Play was stopped for a duration of 20 minutes due to a medical emergency during the Newcastle vs Tottenham match on Sunday. The Tyneside club took to their social media handle to confirm the fan has been taken to the hospital.

Newcastle United has been the talk of the town for the last week. The stadium went into a frenzy as Callum Wilson scored the second-minute opener. The new owners couldn’t have been happier as their side took an early lead. However, football was put aside for a while as a Geordie fan needed medical attention.

Tottenham, who were leading 2-1 at the time, had won a corner around the 40th minute. Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon spotted a fan in discomfort in the East Stand. He immediately brought this to the referee’s (Andre Marriner) attention. The Newcastle medical staff rushed to the fan and ensured that he was stabilized before it was too late. Play was halted for around 20 minutes, during which medical personnel of both clubs attended to the fan.

Newcastle confirmed on their social media platforms that the fan who required medical attention is now stable and is on their way to the hospital.

“The club would like to thank fans for their swift actions in raising the alarm and praise those who provided immediate chest compressions, as well as thanking the on-site medical professionals who swiftly administered emergency treatment using a defibrillator located close to the incident,”

    the statement said.

Newcastle and French legend David Ginola has applauded the efforts taken by the fans who were able to perform CPR at the time of emergency. He also stated that defibrillators help a lot.

Newcastle fans, who were on cloud nine after Mike Ashley’s departure, experienced a roller coaster ride during the match. Despite scoring an early goal, Tottenham controlled the majority of the proceedings. The second half was quite subdued, and it almost felt like the fan’s well being had taken centre stage.

Jonjo Shelvey’s red card and Eric Dier’s own goal towards the end of the match provided a final flurry of emotions to the fans. The match ended 3-1 to Spurs, and it leaves United in 19th position.
