A seven-minute flurry saw the Bavarians score four goals past Leverkusen – in addition to the one they scored early on – in the first 45. Julian Nagesmann’s side cruised to a 5-1 win, despite the clash being billed as a top-of-the-table encounter.

Three minutes into the game, Bayern took the lead after Leon Goretzka spotted the far side run of cenrtre-back Dayot Upamecano and delivered a pin-point pass from a set-piece. The Frenchman volleyed the ball into the path of Robert Lewandowski, and the striker cheekily flicked it past Lukas Hradecky.

A resurgent Leroy Sane hit the post with a driven shot from outside the box in the 19th minute, before Alphonso Davies and Goretzka tested Hradecky in quick succession. The Leverkusen custodian could only keep the Bavarians at bay for so long because once the floodgates opened, the goals came flying in.

Lewandowski scored his second in the 30th minute to kick-start a sensational period for the record holders. The Poland international stole the ball off of his teammate Davies – almost instinctively – and poked it past Hradecky. Four minutes later, a shot from Niklas Sule hit Thomas Muller, wrong-footing the goalkeeper before finding its way into the net. The latter’s inadvertent goal put the new league leaders 3-0 up with barely half an hour played.

Moments after their third goal, the Bavarians stole the ball off right-back Jeremie Frimpong – transitioning into attack with frightening pace – and Muller curled the ball in for Serge Gnabry to score his first of the night. Gnabry scored his second of the night soon after, playing a one-two with Goretzka inside the box before sliding the ball past Hradecky. The clock read 37 minutes, the scoreline 5-0 to Bayern.

Patrik Schick managed to pull one back for Leverkusen in the 55th minute after some neat work by Florian Wirtz. Meanwhile, Lucas Alario had a goal disallowed late on for the home side. Bayern, nonetheless, remained largely untroubled as they cruised to the top of the table.
