Sheriff boss slams Kuyt for demeaning comments after beating Real Madrid

Sheriff Tiraspol manager Yuriy Vernydub slammed former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt for his demanding comments after his side beat Real Madrid (2-1) on Tuesday.

Former Liverpool player Kuyt had previously claimed that the Moldovan side had no place in the competition, saying that teams like Sheriff shouldn’t have anything to do with the Champions League.

Kuyt’s comments came in the wake of the European Super League fiasco, during which Real Madrid – among others – attempted to form an exclusive breakaway league with no means of entry for teams such as Sheriff.

“It was a great player, Dirk Kuyt, who said there is no place in the Champions League for Sheriff, so I’m very happy to destroy his perfect world,”

“At the moment, I am very happy after this game against such a big club like Real Madrid. This is so emotional.

“Some big-name players said before there’s no place in the Champions League for a team like Sheriff, but it’s our place and we proved it.”

    Vernydub said.

Goals from Jasurbek Yakhshiboev and Sebastien Thill on either side of a Karim Benzema penalty ensured that Sheriff came away from the Bernabeu with a win. The Moldovan side took the lead in the 25th minute when forward Yakhshiboev headed a cross from left-back Cristiano past Thibaut Courtois in the net.

Benzema equalized from the spot in the second half, after Vinicius Jr was tripped inside the box by Edmund Addo. However, the minnows stole the game late on thanks to a wonder-strike from Thill, who struck the ball with a powerful first-time volley, and it sailed past Courtois into the net.

Sheriff’s 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on match night 1 of the UEFA Champions League means that they are currently top of their group, ahead of Real and Inter Milan. The Moldovan side plays Inter in a double-header next, with the games set to take place in October and November.
