West Ham took revenge for their weekend’s defeat on Manchester United by knocking the latter out of the EFL Cup. Elsewhere, Chelsea required penalties to beat Villa, as did Spurs against Wolves.

Manuel Lanzini’s ninth-minute goal proved to be the difference between Manchester United and West Ham United in the EFL Cup Third Round. The Hammers beat the Red Devils at Old Trafford by a solitary goal taking revenge for their defeat the previous weekend.

West Ham’s early domination bore fruit when Lanzini popped up in the box to turn in a Ryan Fredericks cross in the ninth minute. The Hammers had gone close previously against a second-string Manchester United side containing Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, and Donny Van De Beek.

Jesse Lingard had a penalty appeal rejected minutes later, and both Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood drew sensational stops from goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. But, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men crashed out of the competition in the third round.

Meanwhile, at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea beat Aston Villa through a penalty shootout to book their place in the next round – where they’ll face Southampton. The Blues took the lead in the second half through Timo Werner, as the German headed in from close range, a cross from Reece James. Werner missed a glorious opportunity to put his team two goals up minutes later by dragging his shot wide of the goal from close range.

Villa, who had come close to taking the lead multiple times through youngster Cameron Archer, scored the equalizing goal in the 64th minute. The striker himself found the net through a superb header following a Matt Cash cross. Level scores at full-time meant that the game went straight to a penalty shootout, where the Blues beat Villa 4-3, with Reece James hitting the winning kick.

Tottenham, too, needed penalties to overcome Wolverhampton Wanderers. The North London outfit raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele.

Wolves came roaring back into the game and levelled the scores just before the hour mark. The game was decided, eventually, in a penalty shootout where Spurs beat Wolves 3-2.
