The PSG striker scored three goals as Argentina beat Bolivia 3-0 in their latest FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In doing so, the 34-year-old became the leading international scorer in men’s football from South Africa.

Messi scored the first of his three goals in the 14th minute. The Paris Saint-Germain star collected the ball from Leandro Paredes high up the pitch, nutmegged Luis Haquin, and scored with a sensational curled effort. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner spurned the opportunity to double his tally in the 43rd minute, as he shot narrowly wide of the post from inside the penalty box.

Nevertheless, Bolivia weren’t to deny Messi his brace, and subsequently, his hat-trick. The second of his three goals arrived in the 64th minute, after some quick exchanges between him and Lautaro Martinez. He completed his treble in the 88th minute, pouncing on a loose ball inside the box and smashing it past the goalkeeper.

Messi’s 78th international goal meant that he leapfrogged Pele as the leading men’s scorer in CONMEBOL. Moreover, his treble meant that Argentina’s unbeaten start to the qualifying campaign continued; the Albiceleste have won five and drawn three of their eight matches so far and are on 18 points.

With fans back in the stadium and a win to their name, Argentina celebrated their Copa America success, albeit delayed. Messi broke down whilst addressing the fans, claiming that he had dreamt about this moment.

“I dreamed about this. Finally, it’s been given to me. After so much waiting. There is no better place to celebrate it than here.

My mother and brothers are here tonight, they suffered a lot and today they celebrate. I am so happy,”

    he said.
