Silverwood gives India credits for knowing ”how to fight back” after 5th Test defeat

England head coach spoke about how his team should have scored more runs in the first innings to put the Indians under pressure.

“Credit to India, they know how to fight back”,

Chris Silverwood said in relation to the mentality of the Indian side.

England were in a commanding position during the first two days of the test match, but a combined effort by the Indian contingent made sure that they would not go without a fight.

Over the last few years, this new-look Indian side has made it a habit to defy the odds and earn wins in adverse situations. England coach gave India their due credit for the same.

Just like Joe Root, Silverwood also reckons that England should have taken advantage of India’s poor first innings by piling on some more runs before the second innings.

“It would have been great to go maybe 190 past them and really pile the pressure on, but again credit to the Indians, they know how to fight back,”

    said the England head coach.

Silverwood stated that England will have to discuss this in the dressing room and make sure that they don’t repeat the same mistake in the future.

India were trailing by 99 runs when Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul went out to bat in the second innings. They scored 466 runs on the back of Hitman’s first overseas century and gave England a tricky task of chasing 368 runs.

England got a solid start in the second innings on the fourth day of play but collapsed on the final day resulting in a historic 157-run victory for the Virat Kohli-led side.

Jasprit Bumrah was at the forefront again on the final day as he reached yet another milestone i.e. 100 wickets in test cricket. Shardul Thakur had a test match to remember as well, as he scored two half centuries and picked up three wickets over both innings.

The 5th and final test will start at Manchester on 10th September, with India leading the series 2-1.
