The Frenchman will remain in custody ahead of his trial on September 10, after being denied bail yet again. The centre-back was said to have had a meltdown after believing that he would spend time in a VIP wing.

Mendy was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault and was subsequently suspended by his club and taken into custody by the police.

He was alleged to have attacked three women over the last ten months, including one below the age of 18, at his home. He faced charges initially on Friday, August 27, and has remained in custody since.

The Sun reported that Mendy had a ‘meltdown’ after he led himself to believe that he would spend his time in the VIP wing. Instead, the 27-year-old was supposed to be kept in the vulnerable prisoners (VP) wing, a section dedicated to keeping prisoners who may be vulnerable to the main prison population away. Sexual offence suspects are among those who occupy this section.

“When Mendy arrived staff explained he was going to be kept on the VP wing for his own safety,”

“But perhaps because he is French and his English isn’t great, he misunderstood what they had said and thought he was being taken to a VIP wing for celebrities.

“He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realized who he was going to be mixing with. He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.”

said a source to The Sun.

Mendy joined City from AS Monaco in 2017 and has played a fleeting role in their subsequent title wins. He has already made one appearance for the club this season in a 1-0 loss against Leicester City in the Community Shield. Mendy has also played ten times for the French national team, and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2018.
