“Couldn’t be more proud”: Root credits teammates, staff after becoming England’s most successful Test captain

England skipper was elated on becoming his country’s most successful Test captain this Saturday as his team dominated India on their way to an innings victory at Headingley.

Root, who has now won 27 of his 55 Tests as a leader, has climbed on top of the list featuring some of English cricket’s biggest names.

Most Tests won by an England captain:

    27 : Joe Root*
    26 : Michael Vaughan
    24 : Alastair Cook
    24 : Andrew Strauss#ENGvIND

    — Umang Pabari (@UPStatsman) August 28, 2021

“As I mentioned before the game, I’m living my boyhood dream of captaining England. It’s something that I dreamt of doing from being really small,”

Root said, as quoted by PTI, following his team’s thumping win by an innings & 76 runs to level the five-match series 1-1.

Root was gracious enough to recognise that this isn’t entirely his moment but also a testament to the hard work put in by his players and the support staff through his tenure.

“I couldn’t be more proud to have gone past Vaughan but you don’t do that on your own as a captain, it’s down to the group of players and the coaching staff as well.”

Despite navigating through different challenges at home and away, Root said he is “enjoying” his time as captain and would love to continue for as long as he is satisfied that the team is moving in the right direction.

The victory at Headingley would’ve pleased Root a lot as his team had been winless since the start of the home summer, including losses to New Zealand at Edgbaston and to India at Lord’s.

With that preceding a 3-1 series defeat in India in February-March, the England skipper was under some pressure to deliver the results while also striving to plug holes in the side ahead of the Ashes tour later in the year.
