UCL group stage draw: two ‘Groups of Death’; Messi vs Ronaldo debate to return, potentially

The 2021/22 UEFA Champions League group stage draw has resulted in two groups of death. Title winner Chelsea are alongside Juventus in Group H, while record champions Real Madrid have been drawn against Inter Milan yet again.

Group A, the first so-called group of death, sees Manchester City take on Paris Saint-Germain. Lionel Messi’s summer move to Paris from Barcelona combined with Cristiano Ronaldo’s prospective transfer to City could result in an unprecedented clash of the titans in the group.

Joining the two super clubs in Group A are Germany’s RB Leipzig and Belgium’s Club Brugge, both a force to be reckoned with in the competition.

Liverpool are in the second group of death – Group B – alongside Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, and the returning AC Milan. The Rossoneri would’ve hoped to ease themselves back into the competition. However, the draw pitted them against some of Europe’s elite.

Jurgen Klopp’ men, meanwhile, will be out for revenge against Atletico, who knocked them out of the 2019/20 competition after an incredible two-legged RO16 tie.

Elsewhere in the competition, Chelsea will play Juventus, Barcelona will take on Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid will go up against Internazionale. Manchester United will get their opportunity to exact revenge for last season’s Europa League final defeat to Villarreal, with both teams drawn in Group F.
