Gomez accuses Gasperini of physical attack, says Atalanta president ‘didn’t have balls’ to ask coach to apologise

Alejandro Gomez claims that he left Atalanta this January after he had a major fallout with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The alleged incident happened in the dressing room at Half time break in Atalanta’s Champions League clash against Midtjylland.

This was the supposed reason for which the former Atalanta captain and fan favourite decided to move away from the club. He has been with the club since 2014 but decided to join Sevilla after this incident.

“I disobeyed him in a tactical indication. There were 10 minutes left until the first half was over and he asked me to play on the right, while I was playing very well on the left. And I said no.

“Having done that in the middle of the game, with the cameras … it was perfectly [fine] that he got angry. I already knew that at half-time he was going to take me out, and so [he did].

“But in the halftime locker room, he exceeded the limits and tried to physically attack me.”

“It was ugly because after seven years they left me lying there, after everything I gave the club. They behaved badly. The president did not have the balls to ask the coach to simply apologise to me. That was the end of everything.”

Gomez was quoted as per Goal.com

In response, Gasperini has completely denied the allegations. The 63-year-old Italian tactician revealed his part of the story to La Gazzetta dello Sport, totally turning the claim on Gomez. The Italian said,

“The physical attack came from him, not me. The real reason he left was because he disrespected the owners of the club.”

“Gomez’s behaviour and attitude, on and off the pitch, had become unacceptable for the coach and his teammates,”

“The physical attack came from him, not me, but the real reason he left Bergamo is because he seriously disrespected the owners of the club.

The 33-year-old joined Atalanta in 2014 from the Ukrainian side Metalist. Since then, he has grown from strength to strength. He has featured for the club in over 200 appearances scoring around 50 goals. His best season for La Dea came in 2016-17 when Gomez scored 16 goals and registered 10 assists in the Serie A.

The Argentine joined Sevilla in the January transfer window and instantly became a pivotal figure at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. He featured in 18 matches last season for Sevilla, netting three goals and an assist.
