Haque hoping victory over Zimbabwe will inspire Bangladesh for next WTC cycle

After dominating Zimbabwe for most parts in Harare, Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque said his team shall take inspiration from their performance and 220-run victory heading into the next cycle of the World Test Championship.

Bangladesh could only manage a last-place finish in the league’s inaugural cycle that culminated in June after getting to play just seven of their scheduled fixtures amid the COVID-19 pandemic and losing six of those.

With things gradually but surely improving, the Asian darkhorse will have a much better opportunity to push for the coveted trophy when the next cycle begins from August.

They’ll play Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India at home and travel to New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies for the rest of their two-year league campaign.

”I think winning this Test match would inspire everyone for the next edition of the ICC Test Championship, as this win will help us in building confidence,”

“I hope everyone in our team will understand their playing role and improve the process we would like to maintain… that we failed to do so on different occasions.”

Mominul was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Apart from the greater assurance of all their matches going ahead, and thus a better opportunity on their hands to plan and prepare for the entire campaign, Bangladesh could feel buoyed by the fact that there will be a more equal points system in play in the next WTC cycle.

The ICC has not only adopted the percentage points model for the WTC cycle spanning 2021-23 but has also confirmed that each game in the cycle will be carrying equal weightage in terms of points independent of how long the series is. Teams will get 12 points for a win, six for a tie and four for a draw.

Bangladesh will begin their campaign with a two-match Test series against Pakistan in November.
