Reports: Liverpool target Serie A star to replace Georginio Wijnaldum; full-back linked with exit

Georginio Wijnaldum completed his move to Paris Saint Germain earlier this week after leaving Liverpool upon contract expiry. The Merseyside club has already narrowed in on a replacement, reportedly.

A humble servant to his club, Georginio Wijnaldum left Liverpool after winning the Champions League and the Premier League. The Dutchman departed upon the expiration of his contract, following which he completed a transfer to Paris Saint Germain. Il Messaggero reports that the Reds have identified his replacement in Lazio’s all-action midfield maestro, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The report concludes that Milinkovic-Savic could be available to purchase at around €60 million this summer, with three years still remaining in his contract. The Serbian joined Lazio in 2015 from KRC Genk and has since developed into one of Biancocelesti’s best players. During this period, he has made almost 250 appearances for the Serie A side and scored 47 goals. He helped his team win the 2018/19 Coppa Italia, and the Supercoppa in 2017 and 2019. The midfielder was voted Lazio’s player of the season for 2020/21.

With the arrival of Maurizio Sarri at Lazio there may be some shake-up to the first-team squad. Sarri has already asked for a new midfielder reportedly, with Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek his desired target. Loftus-Cheek played his best campaign to date under Sarri during the latter’s season-long stint in England. He missed out most of the subsequent campaign due to injury and spent the 2020/21 season out on loan at Fulham.

Meanwhile, back at Liverpool, Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas has been linked with a swift exit despite joining the club last summer. Tsimikas has found opportunities hard to come by, with Scotsman Andrew Robertson irreplaceable due to his form. Fotomac reports that Turkish Super League giants Fenerbahce have asked to take Tsimikas on loan for the season.

The 25-year-old made seven appearances in his debut season in Merseyside, with just two of those coming in the Premier League. The full-back saw minutes in the Champions League and the league cup but returned no goals.
