Bangladesh coach Domingo could extend his contract till 2022 T20 World Cup

Bangladesh are considering giving men’s national team head coach Russell Domingo a contract extension till the end of the next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Even though not confirmed yet, Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan has said Domingo could be retained in his post for the marquee event slated to be held Down Under.

Domingo’s original two-year contract as coach has been extended already till the end of this year’s T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman. But indications from the BCB are that he is likely to stay with the side for another year.

“We have not taken any final decision in this regard. His tenure is till the upcoming T20 World Cup and there is no problem with it. There is a possibility that his contract will be extended. But we have not spoken with him about it. We are discussing it, after that we will take a decision,”

the BCB chairman was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

While Test match success has largely eluded Bangladesh in Domingo’s tenure, the Asian side have had a winning record in ODIs and T20Is. They have managed to clinch victories in 11 of their 18 ODIs since the 2019 World Cup and won 12 of their 22 T20Is.

Ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh have posted back to back T20I series wins over Zimbabwe and Australia, with an unprecedented 4-1 scoreline against the latter perhaps strengthening Domingo’s case for retention as head coach.

Also, since there is hardly over a year to go for the next T20 World Cup, the BCB feels it is not the best time to have a major change in Bangladesh’s support staff.

“We are thinking of extending it for one year as we have two T20 World Cups and we are only thinking about these two events at the moment. We can get a clear picture after discussing it with everyone.”

    Nazmul said.
