Italy, Argentina, and the United States of America are the big winners in this month’s FIFA World Rankings updates, following their respective tournament wins. Germany, on the other hand, have fallen to 16th after a disappointing summer.

Italy have moved to 5th in the FIFA World Rankings after their impressive Euro 2020 win. The Azzurri beat England in the final at Wembley to win their first major international trophy since 2006 and have reaped the rewards in terms of an improved world ranking subsequently.

Roberto Mancini’s men are up 103 points in this month’s update as a result of their 34-match unbeaten streak punctuated by a win at the Euros.

Italy will have a chance to win another trophy in the coming months, as they face Spain in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

2020 Copa America winners Argentina are up 62 points and in 6th place. Lionel Messi led the Albiceleste through an impressive campaign, during which he contributed with the most goals and assists in the tournament. While Messi himself did not score in the final, he helped his team beat rivals Brazil 1-0 to win the title.

The USA are up to tenth in the FIFA Rankings, having won the CONCACAF Nations League and the CONCACAF Gold Cup. USA beat Mexico in the final of both the competitions – 3-2 and 1-0, respectively –, accruing 93 points, as a result, and moving several places up in the rankings. Nevertheless, Gregg Berhalter’s team remains one place beneath Mexico in the latest update.

Germany and Turkey are among the biggest losers in August’s FIFA Rankings. Both teams endured a difficult Euro and have lost valuable points as a result. Turkey, who lost all three of their group games at the summer tournament, are the second biggest losers in terms of points this month. They lost 41 points and are down to 39th position in the world. Germany, on the other hand, are down to 16th after another disappointing tournament and just six places above their worst-ever rank.
