After bidding farewell to Georginio Wijnaldum earlier this summer, Liverpool could be set to lose another influential first-team player. The Athletic reports that there is a stalemate between the club and captain Jordan Henderson over a new contract.
Henderson is entering the final two years of his contract, which means that the club could lose their captain on a free transfer in the future if an agreement cannot be found. Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are said to be keeping close tabs on the situation.
The midfiedler completed a decade as a Liverpool player this summer, following his move to Merseyside from Sunderland in 2011. The Englishman, who was handed the armband following the departure of Steven Gerrard, has made 392 appearances for the Reds. During this period, Hendo won one Premier League title and one UEFA Champions League trophy.
Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market this summer, in terms of both incomings and outgoings. The Reds completed the deal to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig earlier and bid farewell to Georginio Wijnaldum – a key figure in the Jurgen Klopp era. Wijnaldum joined PSG on a free transfer after The Reds decided against renewing his contract.
Plenty more departures can be expected in the coming weeks, with the Reds keen on shifting fringe players. Two who are likely to seal an exit in the coming days are Marco Grujic and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Both perennial loanees, Grujic was targeted by Sassuolo but is instead expected to return to Porto while Awoniyi is set for a permanent move to Union Berlin.
The pair could be joined soon by Harry Wilson, with the Welsh winger attracting interest from Fulham in the Championship. Backup right-back Neco Williams could leave the club in search of first-team football, with Trent Alexander-Arnold currently the nailed-on starter.
