Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli kept in touch with Juventus with a win over Lazio. The Italian side kept their UEFA Champions League hopes alive with a huge win while at the same time knocking back Lazio’s advances up the table.
Napoli have beaten Lazio 5-2 in one of the more surprising results of this game week. Gennaro Gattuso’s side raced into a four-goal lead before Lazio could respond. They added a fifth late on into the game, with the points already in the bag by then. Thanks to their win, Napoli kept up with Juventus in the race for the Champions League. The Bianconeri had won their match against Parma earlier in the week.
Captain Lorenzo Insigne gave Napoli the lead in the seventh minute from the spot before Matteo Politano made it 2-0, five minutes later. Gattuso’s team had less of the ball throughout the match but made their chances count. As such, they were three goals up before the hour mark with Insigne bagging his brace.
Dries Mertens added yet another goal to his tally as he made it four-nil to Napoli in the 65th minute. Only then did Lazio get involved in the match and scored two quick-fire goals to make it 4-2. Ciro Immobile scored first in the 70th minute before Sergej Milinkovic-Savic pulled back another four minutes later.
Nevertheless, Napoli had all but secured the points by that point. Victor Osimhen added further gloss to the scoreline when he bagged his goal in the 80th minute. The match finished 5-2 to Napoli, who are now just two points behind Juve in fourth place.
Elsewhere, Atalanta pushed back AS Roma’s European advances with a 1-1 draw. La Dea took the lead in the first half through Ruslan Malinovskiy but could not find a second goal. Atalanta had a man sent off in the second half when Robin Gosens received his marching orders from the referee. Roma capitalized on the man advantage and levelled the match in the 75th minute. Bryan Cristante scored against his former side to make it 1-1 on the night.
Roma then had a man sent off themselves when the referee showed Roger Ibanez the red. Both teams ended the match with ten men and level on scores. As a result, the Bergamo side remained third in the table while Roma stayed seventh.
