India legend Karthik offers apology for inappropriate remarks made on air

Experienced India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has apologised after facing widespread criticism for his displeasing remarks made from the commentary box last week.

Karthik, who is in the UK right now on a commentary stint with Sky Sports, had given a controversial statement during the 2nd ODI between England and Sri Lanka at The Oval on Thursday.

    While on air, Karthik stated

“batsmen and not liking bats, they go hand in hand. Most of the batters don’t seem to like their bats. They either like another person’s bat. Bats are like a neighbour’s wife. They always feel better.”

Drawing parallels with the preference for bats to the “neighbour’s wife” was a comment that didn’t go down well with many over social media as they called out Karthik for his distasteful comment and sought an apology from the cricketer-turned-commentator.

On Sunday, Karthik addressed the issue in the 3rd ODI in Bristol, saying he was given a lot of stick for his words from his wife and mother and is feeling sorry for his mistake.

“I want to apologize for what happened last game,” he said on air for Sky Sports. “It’s not really what I intended. I just got it all wrong. I apologize to everybody. It’s definitely not the right thing to say. I got a lot of stick from my wife and my mum for saying that.”

Karthik’s apology was accepted positively, and the matter was closed out. It was the only blip in what has been a seamless transition from the playing field to the commentary box for Karthik, who was also on air during the World Test Championship.
