Former Australian batsman and skipper has been named as the new chairman of selectors for the Australian men’s cricket team. The announcement came after Trevor Hohns decided to retire. Bailey has been a part of Australia’s selection panel from 2019 and is now at the helm.

Hohns served in the selection panel of the Australian side for about 21 years. His first stint came between 1991 and 2005 and stepped down after Australia’s loss in the 2005 Ashes. That stint involved a couple of World Cup winning runs as well. His second tenure came between 2016 and 2021 where Australia retained the Ashes in England in 2019.

Bailey now takes over with a couple of big assignments coming up – the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the Ashes at home. The 38-year-old has played 125 international matches for Australia and even captained 57 of those games. He was termed this as a challenging job, but he is looking forward to the job.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Trevor for his incredible work which has helped shape the success of Australian cricket over a long period, including during my days as a player and captain. In what can be a challenging job Trevor has always been calm, consistent and approachable.

Similarly, to his journey, he has made my transition from player to selector as smooth as possible. There is a lot I will take from Trevor’s style and I very much look forward to the journey ahead,”

George Bailey was quoted as saying to cricket.com.au.
