Liverpool set for quiet summer despite Coman, Sanches links; must sell first to buy

No Renato Sanches, no Kingsley Coman, no Youri Tielemans, no Saul. Not yet, at least. Once again, Liverpool are going to need to sell players to generate funds with which they can then dip into the transfer market – reports The Athletic. The Reds have already completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig this summer but must wait until later in the window to bring in further reinforcements.

The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent – James Pearce – reports that despite links with the abovementioned players, the club currently isn’t working on a move for any of them. Instead, the club must focus on selling first, which would enable them to buy should a player they are interested in becomes available.

In terms of outgoings, plenty of activity is expected at Liverpool. There is uncertainty over the futures of squad players such as Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri – both playing few minutes last season under Jurgen Klopp. Meanwhile, academy graduates such as Neco Williams, Nat Phillips, and Harry Wilson are also in demand, and the club is expected not to block any transfers for said players.

There are also doubts over the future of midfielder Marko Grujic, who could be headed to Sassuolo to replace Juventus-bound Manuel Locatelli. Pearce has also reported Porto’s continued interest in Grujic, who signed the Serbian on loan for the previous season.

Sassuolo have asked Liverpool for Marko Grujic as potential new signing to replace Locatelli who’s leaving the club this summer. 🔴 @DiMarzio #LFC #transfers

Liverpool have been reluctant to splurge in the transfer market over the years, instead favouring a sustainable model. The club’s major signings over the last two years have included Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara, while the rest of the budget has gone towards backup options in already stacked positions. To that end, the Reds signed Kostas Tsimikas last season, Adrian and Takumi Minamino the season before.
