Rooney picks England XI for Germany clash: Rashford should start ahead of Grealish, no Saka and Foden

Former England striker Wayne Rooney has stated that the round of 16 tie between England and Germany might not suit Jack Grealish’s style of play, while it will be tailor-made for Marcus Rashford.

The majority of English fans have been vocal about their disappointment over Grealish’s treatment by the England management. However, Three Lions’ manager Gareth Southgate opted for different options in the first two matches of their group stage campaign.

It was only in the third game against the Czech Republic (1-0) where Aston Villa star got a chance to start. That chance also came because Mason Mount, the player who started in his position in the first two matches, was put under self-isolation after coming in close contact with Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for COVID-19.

With Mount’s isolation ending on the day of England’s round of 16 tie against Germany, it is almost certain that the Chelsea midfielder will not feature in that match.

“After all my championing of Jack Grealish, I wouldn’t play him from the start against Germany. He was one of England’s better players against the Czech Republic and it is not that my opinion of him has changed,”

the Derby County manager wrote in Sunday Times.

He then went on to explain his argument by saying

“My thinking is entirely down to how the Germans play. Different opponents demand different approaches and Tuesday’s game is tailor-made for Marcus Rashford — but not Jack.

The more players you have who want to take the ball to feet, the more they can press, so instead of Jack I’d be looking to have runners either side of Harry Kane.”
