Cat Radio: Messi’s Barca contract renewal ‘just a matter of time’

Lionel Messi’s love story with FC Barcelona is set to continue as Cat Radio understands that the negotiations between club president Joan Laporta and the player’s agent and father, Jorge Messi, are said to be on the right track.

In 2021, Messi has looked highly motivated to play for Barcelona after submitting an official transfer request last summer. Since then, times have changed, and the club has got a new president in Joan Laporta. This is Laporta’s second stint, and many pundits believe that the troubled waters at the Camp Nou have calmed down to an extent.

Messi’s motivation has never been money, and the 32-year-old has reiterated that fact. The Argentine is looking for a sporting project that is bound to bring success to Camp Nou. The Blaugrana has been humiliated in their last four UEFA Champions League knockouts and that is something that has hurt the 32-year-old deeply.

Back in 2018, Barcelona were tipped to lift the UCL and Messi was on fire that season. Having gone up 3-0 up in a crunch semi-final tie against Liverpool in the first leg, Barca bottled the lead and ended up losing 4-0 in the second leg.

The La Pulga has even agreed to take a pay-cut to support the club during their financial crisis and is just a testament to the club’s all-time leading goal-scorers loyalty towards the former La Liga champions.

The Argentine looks set to continue with Barcelona for two more seasons, and it is understood that an option to extend the Argentine’s stint by one year will also be included.

Following the completion of his stint at Barca, Messi will be sent as an ambassador of the club to the United States to play in the MLS, which is said to be the 32-year-old’s dream. In his interview with La Sexta, Messi revealed that one of his dreams is to experience the United States lifestyle and play in the MLS.

Barca are said to be looking to announce Messi’s extension in the coming days.  David Beckham’s Inter Miami is said to be the club Messi could play for in the future. Messi’s contract extension in the last few months hasn’t been a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’.
