Chakravarthy ‘confident of clearing fitness test’ ahead of SL series

India’s spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who missed out on international debut due to the failed fitness tests, is confident of clearing it ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

The Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinner was included in the 20-member squad that is set to travel to Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series, comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is from July 13. The BCCI announced the squad earlier this week, headed by Shikhar Dhawan and with plenty of new names.

Chakravarthy was first included in the squad for India’s Australia tour last year after a terrific performance in IPL 2020. A late injury ruled him out and became T Natarajan’s gain as the left-arm pacer went on to play for India in all three formats on tour. Chakravarthy was then denied an opportunity to feature in the home series against England in March as he failed to clear the fitness tests.

Indian cricket team has maintained high fitness standards since Virat Kohli has taken over and does not compromise for any player. Knowing that, the leg-spinner has been working hard on his fitness with the KKR trainers to meet the required standards. Speaking ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, Chakravarthy told the Sportstar that he’s confident of clearing the tests this time.

“I am confident of clearing the fitness tests. Playing for India in the World Twenty20 is a much-cherished dream for me.”

With Yuzvendra Chahal’s dipping form, there’s an open slot for a spinner in Indian team and fitness could be the biggest obstacle Chakravarthy will need to cross.

“I consider myself a leg-spinner though the media calls me a mystery spinner. The leg-spin delivery is my stock ball, and I have the googly and the flipper. I am striving to make my top-spinner more potent.”

Chakravarthy recalled his interaction with India’s coach for the Sri Lanka tour, Rahul Dravid.

“He told me, ‘You have the ability. Don’t take anything for granted. Maintain dedication.”

The 29-year-old has played 21 matches in the Indian Premier League, picking 25 wickets at an impressive economy of 7.35, with best bowling figures of 5/20.
