Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during yesterday’s Euro 2020 game between Denmark and Finland. He collapsed on the ground near the touchline and received immediate medical attention.
The match was suspended as the player was stretchered off the field, but later, in an official statement, UEFA clarified that the player’s health had been stabilised. He was given CPR on the field and was surrounded by the players to shield him from the cameras.
The match was completed later in the day as the Finland team registered a 1-0 victory, their first-ever in the history of the UEFA EURO championships.
Prayers and wishes poured in from all over the world. UEFA also posted an official update soon.
“Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET. The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.”
In the following game of the day, Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku dedicated his goal to Eriksen, who is also his teammate at Inter Milan. Cristiano Ronaldo and UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin also wished a speedy recovery for the midfielder.
Later, the team doctor described the emotional moments post his collapse in the post-match media conference.
“We were called on the pitch when Christian fell down, I didn’t see myself, but it was pretty clear he was unconscious. When I get to him, he’s on his side. He is breathing and I can see pulse but suddenly that changes, and as everyone saw we started giving him CPR.
“The help came really, really fast from the medical team and the rest of the staff, and with their cooperation we did what we did to do. We managed to get Christan back,”
he added.
