Australia add six players to squad for Windies and Bangladesh tours

The Australian selectors added six players to the preliminary 23-man squad that is scheduled to travel to the West Indies and Bangladesh in July-August later this year.

Australia have decided to add six more players to their preliminary squad of 23 players scheduled to travel to the Caribbean and Bangladesh for their upcoming white-ball tours. Ashton Turner, Ben McDermott, Cameron Green, Dan Christian, Nathan Ellis and Wes Agar have been added to the squad.

“The six additions to the Qantas Australian men’s squad follow discussions with players selected in the initial preliminary list for the tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh. During the course of those discussions, it has become clear that recent experiences abroad, including but not limited to extended periods in bio-secure hubs and hard quarantine, have had an impact on the health and wellbeing of some players and their families.

CA has maintained that the wellbeing of players, staff and officials is a top priority, and never more-so than during the Covid-19 pandemic given the extraordinary challenges it has placed upon international athletes and sporting teams,”

the National Selector Trevor Hohns was quoted saying.

McDermott and Christian were supposed to play the Vitality T20 Blast. McDermott was a part of the Derbyshire side, while Christian was the Nottinghamshire skipper. The duo will undergo a two-week quarantine in Australia before flying to the Caribbean at the end of June.

The National Selection Panel has added Ben McDermott, Dan Christian, Cameron Green, Ashton Turner, Wes Agar and Nathan Ellis to the preliminary list of players for the Qantas Australian men’s white ball tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh.

It is the first time since October 2017 that Christian has been called up to the Australian side. Meanwhile, McDermott played the last of his 12 T20Is back in November 2019. Ashton Turner also last played for Australia in T20Is back in November 2019. This is Cameron Green’s maiden T20I callup while Wes Agar and Nathan Ellis received their maiden international call-ups.

Australia are scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is in the Caribbean, and the tour kicks off on the 9th of July. They will then fly to Bangladesh for a series of five T20Is.
