Windies include T&T quick Seales in provisional squad for SA Tests

Seales has made the 17-man provisional Test squad, which is expected to be reduced to a 13-member contingent on Monday, despite very little senior domestic level experience.

The 19-year-old right-arm quick has played only one first-class match to go with just three List A games and six T20s. However, he is seen as one for the future, having shown all the promise through his exploits at last year’s U-19 World Cup in South Africa. Seales had begun with a spell of 4/49 in West Indies U-19’s victory over Australia and ended with 10 scalps to his name in the tournament.

The provisional Test squad for the Proteas series features all of the regular names, who led the side to victory in Bangladesh and held their ground firmly in a drawn series at home against Sri Lanka. Notably, pacer Chemar Holder wasn’t considered, conveying his unavailability to the selectors due to an injury.

The selectors also named Keon Harding, Preston McSween, Marquino Mindley and Nial Smith, the four young quicks, to help the team with their preparation at the nets.

The Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia will host the two Tests, with the first one to be played from June 10 to 14 and the second from June 18 to 22. The series has been rescheduled after being postponed last year due to the hurdles post amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

There were speculations on this front, but it is now confirmed that the series will be part of the first cycle of the World Test Championship, in which both the teams couldn’t make the tournament final. Proteas will also play five T20Is on their trip.
