Roberto Mancini has confirmed the Italy squad for the 2020 UEFA Euro, including Chelsea’s Champions League-winning pair, Emerson and Jorginho. Italy are drawn in Group A of the tournament, alongside Turkey, Switzerland, and Wales.
With Chelsea duo relieved from their club duties, the head coach has finally confirmed his 26-man Italy squad for the 2020 UEFA Euro. Mancini has instead decided to drop youngster Moise Kean from the final squad, alongside young defender Gianluca Mancini and Atalanta’s rising star Matteo Pessina. Napoli winger Matteo Politano also missed out on the final selection, as did Freiburg stalwart Vincenzo Grifo.
Despite troubles at the club level, Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to start in goal for the Azzurri. The youngster recently broke ties off with boyhood club AC Milan and is currently searching for a new home. Mancini preferred to play Leonardo Bonucci and Francesco Acerbi in central defence throughout much of the qualifying process. Both retain their spots in the squad unsurprisingly and are likely to start the first group game against Turkey.
Further up the pitch, Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League-winning midfielder – and vice-captain – Jorginho makes the team. The Regista is expected to form an exciting midfield trio along with Nicolo Barella and Marco Verratti – the latter making it into the final 26 despite injury concerns. Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne will be viewed as the danger men up front for Italy. The pair finished as top scorers for their respective domestic clubs this term. Young forward Giacomo Raspadori is the surprise inclusion in the team.
Italy will take on Turkey (June 11) in their first group game before facing Switzerland (June 16), and finishing against Wales (June 20).
