Messi reportedly agrees to extend Barca deal after drawn-out saga

Lionel Messi is expected to finalize a new agreement with Barcelona, reports in Spain suggest. The Argentinian came close to leaving the club last summer but was stopped from doing so through legal discourse.

The 33-year-old will sign a new contract with Barcelona, putting an end to an incredible saga during which the forward formally asked his club to leave last summer. AS reports that the Argentinian – who had lost faith in the project the previous year – is now ready to commit two more years at Camp Nou, following which he could return to his native country. A move to his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys could be on the cards once his latest deal expires.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that talks have been progressing with Messi during the presentation of Eric Garcia.

Laporta revealed that an impending audit will have no impact on any potential negotiations with Messi, with the club setting aside a reserve for the process.

“For this operation, we set aside a reserve and we prepared a strategy. We want to make him an offer. Things are going well, but it is not a done deal yet. The thing with Leo is that it is not a matter of money from his side.

From our side, we know the limits of the possibilities we have and he is showing a lot of understanding. He wants to stay and we will try our best to make that happen.”

    Laporta said.

Barcelona have been quite active in the transfer market as well. The club recently announced the signing of Messi’s close acquaintance – and international teammate – Sergio Aguero on a free transfer from Manchester City. One day later, they welcomed former youth prospect Garcia back to the club – another free signing from City.

The Blaugrana are also in talks with Giorginio Wijnaldum following his departure from Liverpool. Memphis Depay and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also eyed as potential opportunities, with both players currently unattached. Emerson Royal, whose rights Barcelona share with Real Betis, is expected to be unveiled at Camp Nou soon.
