West Indies return to full training ahead of SA Tests

The 30-man squad have returned to full training in St Lucia in the lead up to the two-match Test series for South Africa. All the players have tested negative on Thursday for COVID-19, and the training squad will take part in a four-day intra-squad game.

Uncapped fast bowler Marquino Mindley had tested positive for COVID-19 a week ago, and that had forced the West Indies squad to train in small groups. Mindley was asymptomatic and has returned a negative report in his most recent test. He now needs another negative report from an RT-PCR test before he re-joins the rest of the squad.

On Friday and Saturday, the players were split into two groups where they trained and underwent team sessions. They are all set to feature in a four-day intra-squad game which has been termed as the “Best vs Best”.

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons feels he is happy with the preparations at the moment. However, this practice game will give fringe players an opportunity to showcase their skills.

“I am happy that we are back to full training. We are happy with the preparations up to this point and everyone is fully aware of what is required.

Yes, we had four good Test matches [vs Bangladesh and Sri Lanka], but at the same time, people need to know that their position is not guaranteed unless they continue to play well.

Guys who are out, need to show that they want to get back in by doing well in these games. So, it is a benefit to every one of us,”

    he said.

West Indies start their mega home season with the two-match Test series against South Africa. This will be followed by five-match T20I series against the same side. Australia fly in for five T20Is and three ODIs in July. Meanwhile, Pakistan will also face West Indies in five T20Is before playing a couple of Test matches.
