Multan Sultans all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been ruled out of the rescheduled leg of the Pakistan Super League 2021 in the UAE. PSL confirmed that he “experienced pain in his lower back” while training in Karachi ahead of the tournament, resuming June 1.

The 41-year-old Afridi, who retired internationally for Pakistan back in 2018, has been advised “complete rest” by the doctor.

We regret to inform you that due to a lower back injury, our superstar, icon, & an integral part of the franchise, @SAfridiOfficial will miss out on the remainder of @thePSLt20 6. The Sultans family will miss you and we are praying 🤲 for your speedy recovery!

Afridi himself said he is very “disappointed” not to be able to take part in the rest of the PSL 2021 despite looking forward to the competition.

While training for the remainder of @thePSLt20, I felt lower back pain & had to consult a doctor. Unfortunately I have been advised to rest and can no longer accompany my team @MultanSultans. I am heartbroken 💔 as I was practicing and training really hard. pic.twitter.com/OjaHD1w9cg

“I am disappointed that I would be sitting out of the tournament, but my best wishes, support and prayers are with the team to take the trophy,”

     Afridi added.

Afridi played four of Sultans’ fixtures in the original window for the PSL 2021 in March before the tournament was postponed due to a surge of COVID-19 positive cases among players and support staff.

Afridi has now been replaced by Asif Afridi, the 34-year-old left-arm spinner with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sultans, who were positioned fifth in the PSL 2021 points table with just one win and four losses when the tournament was suspended initially, will be hoping for a change in their fortunes with the change in destination.
