The end of an era beckons for Manchester City, with legend Sergio Aguero on his way out. The Argentine remarkably exits the Premier League by breaking Wayne Rooney’s record for most goals for a single club.

The Etihad got to witness a familiar sight on the final matchday of the 2020/21 season, albeit for the final time. Sergio Aguero – a club and league legend in all regards – came off the bench to score twice for the Citizens in what was his final league match.

The striker will depart the club after a decade full of success and plenty of broken records. It was only customary that he broke one on what could be his final appearance for the sky blue half of Manchester.

Fans rose to their feet to welcome club hero Aguero onto the pitch for his final league appearance. The Argentine entered the field of play in the 65th minute, and six minutes later, he scored his first goal of the night.

Fernandinho stole possession on the edge of the Everton area, before playing the ball to Aguero. The striker danced past Mason Holgate before poking the ball into the net to the call of Peter Drury bellowing out his name in a familiar fashion.

Five minutes later, the marksman had his second. Fernandinho turned provider for his teammate once more as he picked his run from the wing with an inch-perfect cross. Aguero – as he had done 183 times previously in the league – scored past the goalkeeper.

It was an incredible goal as the Argentine carefully picked his spot in the corner with a powerful header. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could do nothing but watch as the ball hit the back of the net for the fifth time on the night.

    🗣 AAAAGGGGGUUUUEEERRROOOOO!

Sergio Aguero now holds the #PL record for the most goals for a single club. He goes one ahead of the previous record-holder Wayne Rooney.

Aguero’s second goal of the night – his 184th in a decade-long Premier League career – turned out to be historic. The strike saw him overtake Manchester United great Wayne Rooney to become the all-time top goalscorer for a single club in league history. Rooney had scored 183 goals for the Red Devils in 393 appearances. Aguero managed to do one better in just 275 appearances.
