Muller and Hummels return to Germany for Euros after two years

Germany head coach Joachim Low has gone back on his words and included both Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels in the final squad for the 2020 UEFA Euro. The pair join 24 others in the pan-European tournament set to take place this summer.

Low came under a lot of criticism for his decision to drop Muller, Hummels, and Jerome Boateng from any future call-ups but has since decided to revert his decision. Boateng, however, still misses out on the spot in the 26-man squad.

Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich have the largest faction in the recently announced Germany squad. Eight of their players will be involved with Die Mannschaft in the summer tournament, including teenager Jamal Musiala. Borussia Monchengladbach also featured heavily in the squad announcement, with three of their players included. Chelsea have three players called up, including attacking pair Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

The 2020 UEFA Euro, which is being staged in 2021 instead due to the coronavirus outbreak, will be Joachim Low’s final tournament in charge of the German National Team. Low announced that he will be stepping down after the conclusion of the competition, with his former assistant Hansi Flick expected to take over.

The FIFA World Cup in 2014 is the only major tournament that he has won as the national team coach. Meanwhile, he will hope to end his long tenure on a high by lifting silverware again this summer.

Germany are drawn in the “group of death” (Group F) for the upcoming competition, alongside former winners France and Portugal, as well as Hungary.
