All day every day: Leicester’s Iheanacho makes Premier League history in Chelsea loss

Chelsea got their revenge on Leicester City on Tuesday night, as they beat them 2-1 in the league. The Foxes moved down to fourth, but there was joy for one individual.

City’s striker Kelechi Iheanacho made Premier League history by netting against Chelsea on Tuesday night. Although Brendan Rodgers’ side lost the match 2-1, Iheanacho’s late strike made him the first player in league history to score on every day of the week – a record made possible only due to the exceptional circumstances under which this season has been played.

Iheanacho’s goal was his 19th of the season in all competitions. The former Manchester City striker has been one of the breakout stars of this campaign, despite completing a big-money move to Leicester over four years ago.

Limited game time and the everlasting form of Jamie Vardy kept him outside the starting eleven for much of his Leicester tenure, that is, until he cemented his spot in the team this season.

Twelve of Iheanacho’s 19 strikes have come in the Premier League, making him Leicester City’s second top scorer in this competition – one behind Vardy. Meanwhile, his record across all competitions means that he has taken over the mantle from the Englishman and is on track to displace him as the club’s annual top scorer for the first time since 2014/15. Furthermore, Iheanacho has also added seven assists to his goal contributions this season, bringing his total tally to 26 in 38 games.

Despite his personal milestones, Iheanacho’s goal wasn’t enough as Leicester City fell to Chelsea in the Premier League. The forward’s striker resulted from an error by the Chelsea defence, who allowed themselves to be pressed high up the pitch. Still, they held on until the end to avenge their cup final defeat from last Saturday.

Chelsea had a couple of goals disallowed in the first half, with luckless Timo Werner stopped midway through his celebrations both times. The Blues also had a stonewall penalty turned down when Youri Tielemans fouled Werner inside the penalty area.

Nonetheless, second-half goals from Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho proved to be enough for Thomas Tuchel’s men on the night, who overtook the Foxes on the league table.
