Romano: Lampard in talks to take over Crystal Palace

The former Chelsea player and head coach is the current favorite to take over from Roy Hodgson – if he steps down – next season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, via Goal, the talks between the 42-year-old and the Eagles are progressing. While Hodgson hasn’t announced his plans beyond the end of the current season, he is expected to step out of management. The 73-year-old is presumed to be retiring from football at the end of the campaign.

It is increasingly likely that there would be a new manager in the Eagles’ dugout next season. Lampard is among the contenders to take over that role, with talks between the two parties progressing steadily.

Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Frank Lampard.

Lampard’s juvenile managerial career has been punctuated by near misses. He took over Derby County as his first job post his playing career in 2018 and led them to the Championship play-off final – where they were beaten by Aston Villa. He left the midlands when Chelsea came calling in 2019 and helped the Blues secure a top-four finish in his first season back at the club. His first year back at Stamford Bridge ended in an FA Cup final defeat, but he was still largely lauded after guiding the team back into the Champions League despite a transfer ban.

The ex England international was given a large kitty to spend on transfers the subsequent summer, and he helped the club sign players such as Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. Chelsea started the season well but trailed off midway through it, which ultimately cost Lampard his job.
