Cavani takes a dig at European Super League and VAR

In a discussion with Argentine outlet Dos De Punta, the striker did not hold back when talking about the two matters that have hampered United’s otherwise successful season.

“When the Super League came around I told myself: ‘That can’t be possible – if it happens, what can we expect next?”

“I don’t share its ideas at all. I am not in agreement with it.

    Cavani said.

United’s involvement in the scandalous ESL has led to regular mass demonstrations against the Glazer family for their participation in the controversy. While the club also suffered vandalism when hundreds of United fans broke into the stadium as a part of ‘protest’ – demanding their owner’s acquittal imminently.

“You mustn’t deprive more modest teams the chance of playing in the Champions League.

“Or stop average clubs from dreaming of competing with the bigger ones, and having a place among the elite. You can’t deny fans of these clubs the chance to have this experience.”

“Us players don’t count when things like this are brought in. It’s a case of ‘Play and keep your mouth shut – you earn lots of money’.

“Football is becoming a slog for us, even if there is some passion as well. You need to keep a cool head to put up with this routine for a long time.”

The 34-year-old also hit out at the Video Assistant Referee, declaring that technology in modern football is decaying the “essence” of the beautiful game.

“VAR takes away the charm and the essence of football.”

“You don’t know why a referee awards a penalty against you or rules you offside – or even how it works. It is difficult. You score a goal and then have to wait two minutes before you can celebrate.

“You celebrate then they tell you it has been ruled out because your fingernail or your hair was in an offside position. Or else because one of your team-mates committed a minor foul that nobody noticed – 14 passes before you put the ball in the net.”

    Cavani added.

The former PSG striker joined United as a free agent on the deadline day last summer and has scored 15 goals in 37 overall appearances in his first season in England.

Cavani’s previous contract was supposed to expire next month and was almost mooted for a move, after his father, Luis, claimed that the forward was not happy with his life in England and that he wanted to join Boca Juniors .

However, the Uruguay international signed a new one-year deal with the Red Devils last week, ending all speculations over his immediate future at Old Trafford. He has netted eight times in his last seven outings, five of which came against Roma – including two braces in both legs of United’s resounding semi-final victory.

The Red Devils currently look poised to end the season as second in the Premier League, while they also have set up a wonderful opportunity to end the season with silverware when they face Unai Emery’s Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk on May 26.
