DFB Pokal: Haaland and Sancho at the double in cup final win over RB Leipzig

Both Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho scored a brace each, as Borussia Dortmund beat RB Leipzig in the final of the DFB Pokal – the German domestic cup. Edin Terzic’s side claimed their fifth domestic cup in the process.

Dortmund had the psychological advantage heading into the match, thanks to their league win over Leipzig last weekend, and they made it count right from the start. Sancho scored the first of his two goals in the fifth minute of the match, curling the ball past Peter Gulacsi in a sensational manner. The Englishman received the ball just outside the area from Mahmoud Dahoud and used defender Nordi Mukiele as a shield to guide the ball past the goalkeeper.

Edin Terzic’s side went two-nil up in the 28th minute. Dortmund won the ball high up the pitch before Marco Reus played in Haaland. The Norwegian made a mockery out of the retreating Dayot Upamecano before guiding the ball past the custodian in goal. Reus had a hand in another Dortmund goal just before half-time, when he timed his run perfectly in behind the Leipzig defence before squaring the ball to Sancho with the entire goal gaping. The England international took a few extra touches but kept his composure to tap the ball into an empty net.

Leipzig pulled one goal back midway through the second half. Dani Olmo scored with a fizzling strike from range, which goalkeeper Roman Burki could do nothing about. Nevertheless, Haaland restored Dortmund’s three-goal cushion shortly after as he completed his brace. The Norway international managed to guide the ball past Gulacsi in goal despite losing his footing on the edge of the area.

A 4-1 win over their Bundesliga rivals gave Borussia Dortmund their fifth DFB Pokal. The team gathered around after full-time to celebrate Lukasz Piszczek’s career, who will be leaving the club this summer.
