WATCH: Ajax melt Eredivisie trophy to make ‘championship stars’ for season-ticket holders

Ajax won the 2020/21 Eredivisie title by beating Feyenoord 3-0 in the latest round of matches. As if their fans weren’t already in a jubilant mood, the Dutch giants have decided to melt down their trophy to share a star with each of their season ticket holders.

The Dutch giants have always cherished their connection to their fans, often going the extra mile for them. However, their latest endeavour to reward fans for their continued support is unlike anything ever seen before in football.

Ajax won the Dutch Eredivisie title last weekend by beating Feyenoord 3-0. The trophy that they have since collected will not be displayed in their stadium, nor will it be put on the shelves of any club museum. Instead, the club has decided to melt the trophy down to make 42,000 silver stars which, in turn, will be given to each of their season ticket holders.

Each of the supporters eligible for a piece of the silverware will receive their ‘championship star’ on Wednesday, May 12. The club labels it ‘a piece of Ajax’, allowing them to physically share their successes with their fans after a difficult few years.

Ajax’s General Director, Edwin van der Sar, gave his thoughts on the situation to the club’s official website.

“This season, we have largely had to play without our fans. Well, without them sitting in the stands, at least. Despite this, we have felt their support every week. On the way to the stadium, on social media, and in our personal contacts,”

“Previously, when we said ‘this title is for you’, we were expressing how we were doing it for the fans, however sharing the trophy is the ultimate proof that we really are.’ After a turbulent year, we are ensuring our fans feel part of our championship.”

    former Manchester United goalkeeper said.

Meanwhile, Ajax will get memorabilia for their trophy cabinet. Due to the exceptional circumstances involved, the Royal Dutch Football Association has decided to give Ajax two trophies – one of which will be displayed in the cabinet while the other is melted and shared with the fans.
