In the 2020 edition of Vivo IPL, BCCI has set up strict rules when it comes to over-rate. The time to finish designated 20 overs has also been reduced this season to ensure minimum time wastage. MI skipper Rohit Sharma was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate in the clash against DC and has been fined for it.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been fined INR 12 lakh as his side couldn’t finish the required amount of overs in the stipulated time. This is the first time Rohit has been fined for slow over rate this season.

As per the new IPL guidelines, the captain of the team which doesn’t finish its 20 overs in the required time is fined 12 lakh on the first instance of slow over rate. On the second instance during the season, the fine for the captain is doubled (INR 24 lakh) while every other member of playing eleven is fined 25 percent of match fee or INR 6 lakh, whichever is lesser.

When the offence is committed for the third time in a season, the captain has to pay a fee of INR 30 lakh and serve a one-match ban, while rest of the members of the playing eleven are charged with a fine of INR 12 lakh or 50 percent of match fee, whichever is lesser. The regulations have been set to ensure that the game ends in the stipulated time duration and doesn’t go overboard.

Rohit and company, despite taking a lot of time to deliver the overs, ended up on the losing side as the Delhi Capitals registered an important victory. Chasing a modest 137, Delhi Capitals lost a few wickets in the middle overs but some uncharacteristic bowling from Jasprit Bumrah allowed them to cruise to an easy win. Bumrah delivered two no balls in the penultimate over of the game.

Earlier, CSK skipper MS Dhoni was also fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate in their first game of the season against the Delhi Capitals.
