After the deadly second wave of the coronavirus pandemic started wreaking havoc in India, many speculations were made regarding the change in venue of the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, the General Manager of the BCCI has claimed that hosting rights will stay with India in all probability.

The coronavirus pandemic severely impacted innumerable sporting events across the globe. The T20 World Cup, which was slated to be held in Australia in 2020, was postponed due to the same reason. Afterwards, it was decided that the marquee event will be held in India in 2021.

However, due to the monumental rise in COVID positive cases, many prominent cricketing pundits have opined that the 2021 T20 World Cup should not be held in India.

The 2021 T20 World Cup is set to be held in India in the months of October and November this year. Moreover, the backup venue that has been decided which will be utilized if the case tally does not come down in India is the United Arab Emirates.

However, the General Manager of the BCCI), Dhiraj Malhotra, recently claimed that it is too early to comment on the overall situation. He clearly stated that the hosting rights will still stay only with the BCCI.

“It’s too early to say what will happen. But the contingency plan is that it would go to UAE with the hosting rights staying with BCCI,”

said Malhotra, who is also the tournament director of the T20 World Cup.

Moreover, the BCCI are likely to host the T20 World Cup behind closed doors, like the way they are hosting the 14th edition of the IPL amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. However, due to the travel restrictions that several countries have imposed, it might still be a monumental task.

The 14th edition of the IPL is currently underway in India. The tournament started on 9th April 2021, and it will go on till 30th May 2021. The Chennai Super Kings led by MS Dhoni are currently at the top of the points table.
