Lille on the brink of Ligue 1 title after comfortable win over Lens

A Burak Yilmaz brace was enough to secure Lille their 23rd win of the season. The consequence of that result was that Les Dogues moved four points clear at the top of the table and are just two wins away from an unprecedented title win.

Lille beat Lens in their latest Ligue 1 match to continue their march towards a surprising title win. Les Dogues beat their opponents by three goals to nil, courtesy of a brace from veteran striker Burak Yilmaz. Jonathan David also continued his good form of late by bagging yet another goal for the season. Lille are now four points clear at the top of the table with two matches left to play, although that gap could be cut down to one if Paris Saint Germain beat Rennes on Sunday night.

It took Lille just four minutes to take the lead in their match against Lens. Christoph Galtier’s side was awarded a penalty in the second minute of the match when Jonathan Bamba was brought down inside the box by a clumsy challenge from Seko Fofana. Yilmaz stepped up to take the spot-kick and scored to make it 1-0 for his side.

Things went from bad to worse for Lens, who are chasing a European spot themselves. The sixth-placed side saw Clement Michelin sent off for a second bookable offense in the 35th minute, leaving them to play the majority of the match with a man less. Lille took advantage of the situation and scored their second goal just five minutes later.

Once again, it was Yilmaz who punished the opposition with a sensational long-range strike. The Turkish international picked the ball far away from goal before turning his defender and unleashing an unstoppable shot with his left foot. Lens custodian Jean-Louis Leca could do nothing but watch as the ball went into the top corner.

Lille continued to test Leca throughout the match and found a way past him, once again, in the 60th minute. Canadian striker Jonathan David scored the third goal of the match to put his side in complete control of the tie. Les Dogues held onto their clean sheet despite Lens testing Mike Maignan on a few occasions. Consequently, they moved four points clear at the top of the table with just two matches left to play.
