Leicester could fall out of UCL places after defeat to Newcastle

Leicester City were blown away by Newcastle United in their latest Premier League encounter. The Magpies went 4-0 up against the Champions League-chasing Foxes before two goals from Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho salvaged their pride.

The sense of Deja Vu is beginning to creep into the Leicester camp. The Foxes are in a precariously similar position as they were last season; they had Champions League within their grasp only to lose out on the spot in the final weeks. Their latest loss against Newcastle United leaves them at risk of getting caught up again by the chasing pack.

A 4-2 loss against Newcastle meant that Leicester were unable to solidify their position in the league table. While the Foxes remained third despite the reverse, they could fall to fourth if results this weekend don’t go their way. Meanwhile, their loss could also allow the fifth, sixth, and seventh-placed teams to close in on the gap.

Brendan Rodgers’ side got off to a bad start against Newcastle, as the latter scored in the 22nd minute. The in-form Joe Willock found the net again, meaning he has now scored four goals in his last five matches. The Magpies doubled their lead before half-time when Paul Dummett rose highest to head in a Matt Ritchie corner. Leicester, despite all of their dominance, went into the break needing a miracle.

That miracle did not arrive. Instead, Newcastle continued to be ruthless with their chances and were soon four goals to the good. Callum Wilson scored a brace in 11 minutes to put his side in complete control. Leicester’s fightback arrived too late, although the Foxes did manage to pull two goals back. Marc Albrighton scored a stunner in the 80th minute before Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed his customary goal to make it 4-2.

Leicester City’s recent run has seen them lose two and draw one of their last five matches. Things can get much worse for the Foxes, as they play Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham in their final three matches of the season.
