‘I am sure Rohit and selectors have a close eye on him’ – Ganguly feels that Prithvi Shaw is ready for India return

Former BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly and current director of cricket for the Delhi Capitals, believes Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw is ready to play for the Indian team once again.

Ganguly’s remarks come as the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is set to begin on March 3, and the ODI World Cup, which India will host, is only six months away. Shaw’s performance for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL appears to have a high weightage in his selection for the remaining ODIs ahead of the 50-over World Cup.

In an interview with The Times of India, the former India captain stated that he believes youngster Prithvi Shaw, who he considers to be a “good player,” is ready to play for India again. He added that Rohit Sharma and the selectors are surely keeping a “close eye” on the Mumbai-based cricketer.

“I think Prithvi Shaw is ready to play for India. Whether he gets an opportunity will depend on slots. I am sure Rohit Sharma and selectors have a close eye on him. He is a good player and ready,”

    Ganguly said.

Shaw’s last appearance for India was against Sri Lanka in 2021. He was also selected for the home series against New Zealand earlier this year but was benched, with Shubman Gill taking over as an opener.

Prior to Ganguly’s comments, DC head coach Ricky Ponting said on Prithvi Shaw after his arrival in Delhi for the IPL 2023, claiming that the 23-year-old is in great physical shape and that this will be his “biggest season ever” in the Premier League.

“I honestly feel that this is going to be his biggest season ever in the IPL. He’s trained harder and better than I’ve ever seen. I’m pretty sure leading into an IPL, he is in better physical shape than I’ve ever seen him before,”

    Ponting said.

“And I spoke to him the other day about his attitude and the way that he’s working and how things are going. I honestly feel that this is going to be his biggest season ever in the IPL.”
