In a new development, Lockie Ferguson has been chosen to lead a second-string New Zealand squad for the upcoming ODI series in Bangladesh. The decision to grant rest to several top-choice players has been made to ensure their readiness for the impending World Cup in India.

The customary first-choice ODI skipper Kane Williamson is among those who will not participate in the series as he continues his race against time to recover fitness for the World Cup. Several other critical players have also been given a break following the England tour, including Tom Latham (interim captain), wicketkeeper-batsmen Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips, versatile cricketers Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner, and quick bowlers Matt Henry and Tim Southee.

Notably, Mark Chapman and James Neesham are unavailable for selection due to their respective commitments as they will be attending the births of their children. In contrast, senior fast bowler Trent Boult has not been rested, as he only recently rejoined the squad.

The team has included Dean Foxcroft, an uncapped talent, in the squad. Foxcroft may have the opportunity to make his debut in the 50-over format. He recently made his T20I debut for New Zealand in the UAE. For this series, head coach Gary Stead will also take a short sabbatical, with batting coach Luke Ronchi assuming the role of coach for the three matches scheduled in Dhaka on September 21, 23, and 26.

The strategic decision by the New Zealand cricket team to rest key players underscores a focus of the management choosing not to risk partially fit or overloaded senior players at a time when the World Cup looms large. While it presents an opportunity for emerging talent to gain invaluable international experience, it also gives the New Zealand team management to experiment with their side while also giving the senior pros to rest amidst a tight international schedule.
