Australia will miss the services of one of their premier seamers Josh Hazlewood in the series opener against South Africa, which begins on December 17 at the Gabba. The 31-year-old had to miss the second Test versus the West Indies at Adelaide due to side strain.

Meanwhile, skipper Pat Cummins, who also had to miss the pink ball Test, is expected to fully recover from quad strain before they take on the Proteas.

The selectors announced a 14-member squad on Monday morning, with Lance Morris retaining his spot after he received a maiden call-up for the second Test against the Windies.

As for the spot in the playing XI, Scott Boland is favourite to retain his place ahead of Michael Neser. Boland claimed a triple-wicket maiden on Saturday at Adelaide and has 21 scalps in just four Tests at a mind boggling average of 10.33.

Cummins bowled a few overs on the sidelines ahead of the third and fourth day’s play in Adelaide. The right arm pacer is expected to go through another session at the ground on Tuesday.

“Pat continues to improve, bowled with freedom on Saturday and appears likely to play this match although Josh will need more time. With that in mind we have retained Michael Neser and Lance Morris in the squad for this match,”

    said national selector George Bailey.

“Michael bowled superbly in Adelaide, as did Scott. We were impressed as always with their performances that backed up what they have achieved in the past. Lance is a very exciting prospect who will benefit from time with the squad,”

    he added.

The three-match series between the two sides is crucial in the context of the World Test Championship. The Aussies top the table with 75% points win percentage while South Africa are second with 60%.
