Former Indian cricketer Reetinder Sodhi believes that, despite Ishan Kishan’s incredible knock on Saturday, fans should not rush to make a decision about the ODI World Cup in India next year.

Ishan scored 210 runs in just 131 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history. However, this was a one-off game, and Sodhi believes that if the youngster is to displace the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, he will need to consistently produce big scores.

“Ishan has played an incredible knock and has put himself firmly in the reckoning for the 50-over World Cup. But we also shouldn’t get carried away as he will need to be consistent too. If he scores 70-80 runs or even a hundred consistently, he could be a big contender to make it to the World Cup squad,”

he said while speaking to India News.

Meanwhile, Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, spoke about how Kohli was instrumental in keeping young Kishan calm during his nervous 90s and 190s.

Ishan spoke after the game about how important it was for him to have someone as experienced as Virat Kohli on the other end to help him avoid making rash shot choices while nervous.

    On this, Rajkumar stated:

“It was good that Ishan Kishan had a senior pro like Virat Kohli at the other end who kept talking to him. As a youngster, you do have a rush of blood sometimes and it’s important for the experienced player to calm you down and keep on talking to you. Even Ishan admitted that Kohli was instrumental in calming him down as he got closer to his double hundred.”

With the ODI World Cup approaching, it will be interesting to see who is ahead of Ishan and Shubman Gill in the pecking order.

Also with the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Prithvi Shaw consistently knocking the doors of Indian selectors with consistent display from the bat and KL Rahul also amongst the Men in Blue ranks, come next October, it will be interesting to see who makes it into the final squad of the World Cup.
