An incident of racism has been revealed against Manchester City right-back Rico Lewis, who was impressive in the English champions’ 3-1 victory over Sevilla. City have since confirmed that two arrests have been made following the incident and that a thorough investigation will be taken up.

The 17-year-old opened the scoring in the UEFA Champions League encounter against Sevilla with a calm finish up against Yassine Bounou. In the 85 minutes that he was on pitch Lewis made six passes into the final third in a performance much beyond his years, as Pep Guardiola’s side captured a 3-1 victory, sealing their place at the top of their group.

Argentine youngster Julian Alvarez was also productive, as the former River Plate forward scored one goal and assisted two more, including Lewis’ opener.

However, Manchester City’s victory against the Spaniards was overshadowed by an unwanted incident in the crowd, as it appeared that two members in the away section of the crowd at the Etihad were chanting racist slurs against Rico Lewis.

Manchester City reported the incident and made it clear that the two miscreants were arrested immediately following the intimation from the concerned authorities.

Sevilla FC have also made a statement addressing the matter, saying that they condemn the actions and behaviour of the two supporters and adding that they do not support racism in any shape or form.

“Sevilla FC strongly condemn the behaviour of two fans in the away section of Manchester City’s stadium, who were identified and accused of allegedly behaving in a racist manner towards Manchester City player Rico Lewis.

“Sevilla FC are awaiting official confirmation of these facts, of which they have been made aware by Manchester City, and if these are proven, the two fans will be removed from the list of members.”
