During Barcelona’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Inter Milan, centre-back Andreas Christensen tore a ligament in his left ankle. The Denmark international will undergo tests later on Wednesday to determine the severity of his injury.

“The first team player Andreas Christensen suffers a sprain of the external ligament in his left ankle. Tomorrow, Wednesday, more tests will be done to find out the exact extent of the injury,”

    the Catalan team reported.

The Dane, who has done well since joining Barca as a free agent in the summer, was tackled by Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the second half of the game. Christensen attempted to continue after receiving treatment from the medical team, but was unable to do so and was withdrawn by manager Xavi Hernandez, with Gerard Pique taking his place on the field.

AS reporter Javi Miguel has since claimed that Christensen could be out for up to three weeks, which will be devastating for Barcelona, who are already without Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde. With the first El Clasico of the season less than two weeks away, Xavi’s men are down to just Pique and Eric Garcia as senior centre-backs.

Christensen’s injury comes just ahead of a string of difficult games, including this weekend’s LaLiga match against Celta Vigo, the rematch with Inter on October 12, and the Clasico match against Real Madrid on October 16. Following that, the Blaugrana faces Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao in the league.

The player joined Barcelona from Chelsea in the summer transfer window and has appeared in six games across all competitions. The 26-year-old has started every Champions League game, but he may now be in a race against time to be fit for Denmark at the World Cup which will begin on November 20.
