The Catalans have secured the future of one of their most promising stars – Gavi. The midfielder, with whom the club was in negotiations for a long time, has signed fresh terms for four more years, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season. Additionally, the club has set his release clause – as they are obligated to do so under Spanish law – at a whopping one billion euros.

The club announced that the presentation of Gavi’s new contract will take place on the evening of September 15. The player will sign his contract alongside president Joan Laporta on the field at Camp Nou, following which both of them will address those present.

Gavi has been ever-present in the midfield under Xavi Hernandez, who returned last year to take over as the men’s first-team manager at his former club. The Spaniard was instantly impressed by the youngster, breaking down what makes him a special talent in one of his interviews.

“He’s very good at recovering possession, taking the ball away from the opponents. He’s very competitive. He understands the high press very well; he’s excellent at that,”

    Xavi said on Gavi.

“He turns very well when we want to play in between the lines. But he needs to manage himself – he needs to find the right resources in the right moments – knowing when to attack the space better, when to let the wingers run or when to pass it.

“These are tactical situations where he needs to improve. He’s an incredible talent and a joy to coach. At 17, to already have made such an impact and play with the national side is marvellous.”

The midfielder broke into the Barcelona first team during the early months of the 2021/22 season. His impressive performances meant that he would finish the season as a full-time first-team member and a Spain international, with 47 appearances for the former and 10, so far, for the latter.
