LaLiga boss Tebas threatens to report Premier League spending to UEFA

Javier Tebas is dissatisfied with English football, and the president of La Liga has stated that he will complain to UEFA about Premier League clubs’ spending of the recently concluded transfer window.

The Premier League spent 1.9 billion pounds this summer as clubs prepared for a hectic season with the World Cup break in the middle. The clubs collectively spent 49% of the spending of the top five leagues, more than double second on the list, Serie A.

While fans in this country may be pleased with how much money has been spent, LaLiga chief Tebas is not, especially given that teams in Spain have been constrained by wage caps imposed by the Spanish federation.

The Spaniard is prepared to go to UEFA to complain about how much money is being spent on transfers in the Premier League, claiming that it’s irresponsible.

“Premier League revenues are 1.8 times more than LaLiga or Bundesliga but this negative amount is 20 times more than the Spanish league which has very good financial control,”

he said in a public presentation on La Liga spending limits.

“Something doesn’t make sense there, so what’s happening? There’s a lot of cheque books coming out from clubs like Manchester City that sign a certain amount of players. Even the Championship lost €3bn over five years. The contributions of capital from club owners from Premier League clubs to compensate losses compared to LaLiga.

Tebas also revealed during the presentation the significant difference in Barcelona’s wage cap this season versus the previous season. That is only possible due to the number of ‘financial levers’ the club has had to release this summer in order to sign players like Robert Lewandowski and Raphina. They will almost certainly have more problems in future seasons, which means they will still have to worry about how to reduce their wage budget.

This isn’t the first time that Tebas has questioned the spending of the clubs, with the 60-year-old previously reporting PSG. He was dissatisfied with the Paris based club able to spend on re-signing Kylian Mbappe, with his own league champions Real Madrid missing out on the World Cup winner, which he described as a ‘insult to football.

At the time, UEFA stated that they won’t be forced by Tebas to take action, and the same could happen if he complains about English teams.
